I am a member of the Federation of the Dibedou Community Action Group (FEGACD), which Lambi Fund supported with a farmer's micro-credit fund, seeds, tools and sustainable agriculture training. My husband and I have nine children and two of them are married with children of their own. My husband and I work hard to raise our family by farming and I also sell goods at the local market. I was only able to complete fourth grade so I am proud that we have been able to send our younger children to a nearby school. I like FEGACD because we are able to sit down together, discuss common problems and come up with a community solution. I also like FEGACD because it is one of the few organizations that supports the rights of women in society. I also learn a lot at the women's conferences that Lambi Fund convenes every year. I hope for a better life for my daughters and Lambi Fund is helping us work towards that.

Help Antonia make that dream a reality. Donate now for Lambi Fund programs for women.

Book Review

Co-Founder Catherine Maternowska has published a new book. In Reproducing Inequities: Poverty and the Politics of Population in Haiti (Rutgers University Press), Maternowska argues that we too easily overlook the political dynamics that shape choices about family planning. Through a detailed study of the attempt to provide modern contraception in the community of Cité Soleil, Maternowska demonstrates the complex interplay between local and global politics that so often thwarts well-intended policy initiatives. Medical anthropologists, she argues, have an important role to play in developing new action plans for better policy implementation. Ethnographic studies in desperate, dangerous locations provide essential data that can point the way to solutions for the dilemmas of contraception in poor communities worldwide. The book can be ordered for $26.95 from the Rutgers University Press website.

Welcome New Board Members

Lambi Fund welcomes three new members to its Board of Directors. Gyliane Morgan, A Haitian American banker in New Jersey; Wendy Emrich, a donor activist and single mother of two adopted Haitian children; and Nadege Clitandre, a Ph.D. candidate in African Diaspora Studies, at the University of California, Berkeley. (And yes, she is the daughter of famed Haitian author, Pierre Clitandre.) Welcome Gyliane, Wendy and Nadege!

And Farewell

Lambi Fund bids a fond farewell to long term board member, Laurie Emrich. A dedicated and passionate supporter of the Lambi Fund, Laurie has servced in the roles of Secretary and Treasurer of the Lambi Fund Board of Directors. We will miss her but not for long as Laurie is joining the newly formed Honorary Council of the Lambi Fund.

Why I Give

By Laurie Emrich

I grew up in Colorado, in a family with a vision of social justice and where community work (local and global) was valued. In my own life, I have tried to do just that through my work in international public health in the 80's and 90's, and more recently as a student of, and then reformer and activist within the world of U.S. and Washington DC. philanthropy.

I believe in community-based, social change philanthropy, and to me the Lambi Fund of Haiti is an excellent example of a respectful, effective fund that supports grassroots development organizations. Lambi Fund staff listen to the concerns and priorities, as voiced based organizations. This is how their work becomes truly about building a social change movement, not just provision of services.

I have been a donor since 1997 and for the last eight years have served on the board, visiting project sites on five separate occasions. It has been my honor to work with the staff and board of this model of alternative development for Haiti.
