Danny Laferrière, one of Haiti’s most renown writers, was inducted into the Académie Française, the “preeminent French council for matters pertaining to the French language." Laferrière is the first Haitian to be inducted into the Académie although Alexandre Dumas was of Haitian descent. Laferrière’s 2009 novel, L'énigme du retour, recounts in novel form the experience of his return to Haiti 33 years after his departure.
