François Hollande made a formal visit to Haiti last week, the first French president to do so. This visit was welcomed by the businesses and the government, but for many, it brought back painful memories of France's 1825 indepence debt that crippled Haiti financially for over 100 years. Hollande made mention during his trip of a 'moral debt' owed to Haiti, but did not go into specifics of when or how this debt would be repaid.
